PROCESSION aus dem chilenischen Libertador sind für mich eine der Überraschungen des diesjährigen Doom Shall Rise Festivals gewesen. Dass es in dem südamerkanischen Land bodenständige Verkünder der Langsamkeit gibt, war mir zwar bewusst, nicht aber dass eine mir bis dato unbekannte Gruppe eine Form des episch traditionellen Doom zelebriert, die mir den Verlust der britischen Warning erheblich erleichert. Wie das funktioniert, beweisen PROCESSION nicht nur on stage sondern auch auf ihrer aktuerlen EP „The Cult of Disease“. Hier wird auf schwerst schleppende Art und Weise sowohl rhythmisch als auch rifftechnisch der Langsamkeit gehuldigt, die von erhabenen Hooklines eingerahmt und bombastischem Klargesang lückenlos ausgefüllt wird. Wer jetzt denkt: „Boah nee, nicht noch so ein Schlafbeschleuniger!“, der liegt absolut falsch. PROCESSION verstehen es perfekt, zu passendem Zeitpunkt die Tristesse mittels Takterhöhung aufzulockern, um den Hörer anschließend wieder tief in den agonischen Abgrund zu werfen, ein brilliant vertontes Wechselbad der Gefühle. Auf dem Release gibt es eigentlich keinen schwachen Song. Wenn man denn so will, stechen „The Funeral of an Age“, „Down the River of Corpses“ und „Incinerate“ als absolut geniale Doom Hymnen aus den sechs Titeln der EP heraus. Leider ist die Vinylversion bei Iron Kodex Records bereits vergriffen. Das ist insofern zu verschmerzen, als dass PROCESSION von der CD auch höllisch gut klingen. Vielen Dank für diese wunderschöne Doom Veröffentlichung!

Black Market Ministry sind laut, dreckig und brutal. Alle Maniacs, die auf Eyehategod zu uralten Demozeiten, Punkrockattitüde, Mut zum Polkatakt und abartigen Schreigesang stehen, sollten mit dem aktuellen Album des Quartetts aus Monroe (Louisiana/USA) warm werden. BLACK MARKET MINISTRY bieten mit „Voices of the Coming Plaque“ fies oldschooligen und, um einen kompetenten Musikfreund zu zitieren, „assihaften“ Sludgecore. Das Klangmassaker erstreckt sich über fast eine Stunde und immerhin elf Titel. BLACK MARKET MINISTRY sind absolut nichts für schwache Nerven, Musikschöngeister und jene, die Abwechslung lieben. So wiederholen sich diverse Passagen das eine, andere und erneute Mal (leider auch die Speedpolka). Immerhin glänzt die Saitenfraktion mit ambitionierten Soli, mitreißend schleppenden Riffs und netten Bluesklängen. An der Schlagzeugarbeit in den schnellen Passagen sollte unbedingt gefeilt werden. Mit diesem Release bleiben Leaf Lust Records auf jeden Fall ihrem Motto „We will kill you!“ treu und verbreiten wieder einmal Chaos in der Untergrundmasse.

Sabazius - "Devotional Songs"

SABAZIUS hätten sich wohl keinen passenderen Termin für die Veröffentlichung ihres aktuellen Albums „Devotional Songs“ aussuchen können als den heiligen Ostersonntag. Nach über 2000 Jahren sollte die Auferstehung Jesu keine allzu große Überraschung mehr darstellen. Auch die kommerziell pervertierte Zelebrierung dieses faktisch nicht einmal nachgewiesenen Ereignisses beraubt den Feiertag jeglichem zumindest rationellen Sinn. Ab sofort feiere ich die Wiederauferstehung von SABAZIUS und deren höchst sozialen Akt, ihre „Devotional Songs“ kostenlos der breiten Masse zur Verfügung zu stellen. Das ist Altruismus in Reinform und gebührt der Beweihräucherung. Frei von messianischen Ambitionen huldigen SABAZIUS ihrer Religion. „Devotional Songs“ ist so etwas wie das neue Testament des Doom und hebt das künstlerische Schaffen der Briten auf die nächste transzendentale Bewusstseinsebene. Standen die Titel vorangegangener Releases noch unabhängig nebeneinander, scheint nun alles aus einem spirituellen Guss erschaffen zu sein. „Asana“ (Part I) setzt die Gebetsmühlen mit feinen Glockentönen und einem sich wiederholenden, anschwellenden Riff in Bewegung. „Her Crimson Lotus Feet“ ist eine Stunde und zwölf Minuten Anbetung der ambienten Klanggeister, die mittels dröhnendem Aufbegehren und partiellem Sprechgesang durch funerale Riffexzesse bis zum kortikalen Klangkollaps getrieben werden. „Shyama“ setzt diese Vorgehensweise eine weitere Stunde und sieben Minuten fort. Zu den schwer schleppenden Riffs gesellen sich hier noch fiese Übersteuerungen und unterweltliche Geisterbeschwörungen, die zu fortgeschrittener Zeit in nahezu schwarzmetallische Hysterie ausufern. „Asana“ (Part II) schließt die Möbiusschleife, in der sich unser erbärmliches Erdendasein befindet, denn jedes Ende bedeutet Anfang. SABAZIUS sind Apostel des Doom, „Devotional Songs“ ist sowohl die Urkunde ihres Glaubens als auch Psalmbuch, das unser primitives Bedürfnis nach Anbetung befriedigt. Frohe Ostern!

Samothrace (Interview)

Just back from the road Bryan Spinks of SAMOTHRACE found some time to answer a couple of questions about the band and their debut album "Life's Trade" that's  one of my favorite Doom releases of the last year.

When did you form SAMOTHRACE, on a trip to the Greek island with the same name?

Spinks: Nah, we've never been. There had been discussions between us members of starting the band in 2005, but we couldn't all move to Lawrence, KS until I belive April '06. Once we were all in the same town we began writing. I should say we had no drummer. It was the fall of '06 when we found our first drummer. We began playing, gigging, and after another drummer came in, touring shortly thereafter.

Please tell us about the actual album “Life’s Trade”?

Spinks: "Life's Trade" is our first official release. The CD/2xLP versions came out on the label 20 Buck Spin. It took close to 1 1/2 years for us to get the material written and things in oder to enter the studio. We went to producer/friend Sanford Parker at Semaphore Studio in Chicago, IL to head the recording helm. We are all very pleased with the outcome.

Which themes have influenced the lyrics?

Spinks: The lyrics are influenced by a variety of things pertaining to political and social strife. The oppressed and the oppressor. However, we do try and get the main point across with as few words as possible. Sort of a more poetic approach to the lyrical structure than a call and response.

Who is the writer for the group?

Spinks: While I tend to write most of the songs riffs and stuctures, or the "skeleton" as we call it, it takes us all to complete any given track to it's fullest potential. We really do spend a good amount of time figuring out all the possible melodies and note structures that will complement any given riff or progression. From there we can pice together what we feel to be the best way to lay down each riff.

Who is responsible for the fantastic cover artwork/LP design?

Spinks: That award goes to artist David V. D'Andrea. He has done some amazing artwork with the liks of Om, Witchcraft, Asunder, Graves at Sea, and the list goes on. He is an amazing artist. We are very stoked with how the artwork turned out.

All SAMOTHRACE members have individual involvements in the DIY Punk/Hardcore/Metal community. How did you guys decide on what the band would sound like?

Spinks: We all had conversations over the phone before choosing to and subsequently meeting up in Kansas. I had been without band for a short while and our original guitarist, Renata, and myself were really working hard to write and layer some material to start jamming. The riffs were the music we wanted to hear, but played and written by us. I mean that to sound in no way egotistical. It really was my goal to write songs I would want to hear on my stereo during a good session.

What bands have influenced your sound?

Spinks: We have extremely varied backgrounds, musically speaking. We have all been a part of the metal/punk cummunity for a long time now, but we also have other musical interests on an individual basis that in no way directly pertain to Samothrace. I guess I'd say we are influenced by all the bands we listen to, together and individually. That being said, we have a great deal of respect for those who came before us. Cheers to them all!

The whole band has left Lawrence. Why did you all move to Seattle?

Spinks: Most of us had been in Kansas and Oklahoma our whole lives. It was time to get out, man. Seattle had been on the list of options for some time now and since our new guitarist was already living there, it seemed like a natural choice. We've got many good friends out here.

Are there plans touring Europe? Many would appreciate this.

Spinks: Yes, we difinitley plan to tour Europe. We just want to make sure the time is right. We were thinking of doing one more full U.S. tour this fall and then starting to plan a European tour. We'll keep everyone updated when we know more.

Are you working on new material?

Spinks: We are currently writing new material for our next full length and a split LP, both to be released by 20 Buck Spin. We will have more info soon, but the split is looking like it will be killer! We also have a rad split lined up for I'm Better Than Everyone Records with our good friends The Roller from Austin, TX. More info on all this as things become more solidified.

Any final words?

Mit Sicherheit würde sich Lord Sidney (1732-1800, britischer Innenminister) im Grabe umdrehen, wenn er wüsste, dass die nach ihm benannte Sträflingsansiedlung heute die Hauptstadt von Australien ist. Ein nicht unerheblicher Prozentsatz der Menschheit ist dem British Empire anscheinend sehr dankbar für seine damalige Isolationspolitik, denn sie ermöglichte erst, dass aus der subkontinentalen Abgeschiedenheit heraus Bands wie AC/DC die Welt mit ihrem Rock überziehen und akustisch Rache für die damals erlittene Schmach üben können. Seit dem Sommer 2007 erreichten uns regelmäßig Gerüchte über eine neue Untergrundbewegung, die sich selbst SUMMONUS nennt. Über Umwege erhielt ich heute deren erstes offizielles Lebenszeichen in Form eines CD-Albums. Als Anführer der Gruppierung geben sich Rod (vocals), Trav (guitar), Keith (bass) und Nathan (drums) zu erkennen. Die fünf Tracks des Debüts vermitteln uns einen unmissverständlichen Eindruck über die Absichten von SUMMONUS. Bereits das Intro „Saturnus“ lehnt sich gegen gängige mitteleuropäische Wertemaßstäbe, indem es den Hörer mit psychedelischen Stonermelodien und heulenden Bluesriffs auf höllische Pfade zu führen versucht. „Down on the Reeperbahn“ huldigt einer exzessiven Lebensweise, wie sie in vielen Städten zum Schutz der Bürger hinter verschlossene Tore gebracht wurde. Nach dem Motto „Wir machen keine Gefangenen!“ wird hier rücksichtslos auf das Schlagzeug eingeschlagen. Wie die amerikanische Musikgruppe Slayer (Mörder, Würger) versucht man mit fiesen Thrashriffs, den ahnungslosen Musikliebhaber von seinem tugendhaften Weg abzubringen. Die böse, mit grunzenden und aggressiven Tierlauten vergleichbare Stimmlage des Sängers jagt einem wirklich Angst ein. Ab der Mitte von „Grey“ gesellen sich auch noch groovige Rhythmuspassagen hinzu, die gepaart mit eingängigen Hooklines den wachen Geisteszustand vernebeln sollen. „Two Lane Blacktop“ heroisiert ganz klar die fiesen Machenschaften einer seit den siebziger Jahren bei der Jugend sehr beliebten britischen Rockgruppe, die sich selbst Black Sabbath (Schwarze Messe) nannten und die Bevölkerung mit ihren oft satanischen Texten und Melodien in Angst und Schrecken versetzten. Hier setzt SUMMONUS auf eine besonders tückische Strategie, indem die Geschwindigkeit ganz nach unten gedrosselt wird. Das besonders klagende und heruntergestimmte Gitarrenspiel verursacht dabei absichtlich tiefe Traurigkeit und unheilbare Depressionen. „The Gallows“ vereinigt alle dunklen Kräfte, also Stoner-, Blues- und Trashelemente, unterweltliche Texte, psychedelische Melodien, wilde, groovende sowie schleppende Schlagzeugrhythmen usw. zu einem finalen Racheakt. Sympathisanten bezeichnen diese Musik als Heavy Metal (Schweres Eisen), Sludge (Schlamm) oder auch Doom (Schicksal, Untergang). Meiden Sie zu ihrem eigenen Schutz und dem ihrer Mitmenschen eine hohe Lautstärke, lassen Sie sich auch nicht zu gefährlichen Kopfbewegungen (sogenanntes moschen) verleiten und spielen Sie das Album unter keinen Umständen rückwärts ab, weil sonst beschwörende Formeln wie zum Beispiel „Sabbathian hailz!“ ihr unheilvolles Werk verrichten werden. Curse The Sun (Interview)

I recently stepped over CURSE THE SON listening to EGB’s last „Droning Earth“ compilation no. 23. With their song “Pulsator Bringer” there is offered a devastating piece of slow and low tuned Doom, in my opinion the one and only addicting piece on this release. Ron kindly spent some time answering my questions:

Maybe you first introduce Curse The Son to anybody never heard before of you. What ever we should know about…

Ron: Well, I put the band together in the spring of 2008. Cheech(Bass) and I have been playing together in various bands for a long time, and we found Charles(Drums) in an online ad. We were very lucky to find him, because there aren't many people in our area who want to play slow.

What do you generally think about Curse The Son entering a compilation like “Droning Earth”? How did this cooperation happen? Any resonances so far?

Ron: I think it is great, and I really appreciate them helping us get some more exposure. They contacted me and specifically asked for "Pulsotar Bringer"....I thought that was really cool. Our site has certainly been more active since we got on that comp. It is important to me that people HEAR the music.....there are a lot of bands out there and it is easy to get overlooked!

“Pulsator Bringer” is an outtake from your upcoming EP called “Globus Hystericus” that will be released on April 15th. Please tell us about this release!

Ron: "Globus Hystericus" is a self-released CD. This is our introduction to the world of stoner/doom fans. It is 2 songs from a session last April, and 2 from this past summer. I know that people like to download, and thats fine, but a CD always sound better, so we will be selling them for $4 shipped anywhere in the world.

There is a full-length release planned to bring up later this year too, isn’t it? What can one expect?

Ron: The new stuff that we are writing is coming along great. As a group we are really starting to settle in. The music is very heavy....there will not be some radical departure from our established style. If you like the songs you've already heard, then you are going to love the new stuff. We are about halfway there, in terms of the writing. Go in to record in a few months. It will probably be out next fall.

Who is featuring your releases, any label yet?

Ron: As of yet we are not a signed band......we are hoping to change that very soon.

What are Curse The Son’s musical influences when creating songs? You’re all digging Sleep stuff I guess?

Ron: Well, I do love Sleep but when I'm writing riffs....I don't really try to emulate someone. Generally it's more about cranking the Laney, and just letting it happen. I don't really hear the riffs in my head anymore...I used to. Now I just put the guitar on and sometimes great shit happens, and sometimes it's junk.

What are your personal faves when listening to music, just Doom?

Ron: No, I listen to all types of metal. As far as Doom goes, Sabbath is the band that got me on this path. They are the holy grail for me. I also listen to Witchfinder General, Sleep, Goatsnake, COC, Trouble, Electric Wizard, Solitude Aeturnus......,but I also like Slayer, Priest, Motorhead, AC/DC, and a lot of old school thrash metal.

What are in your opinion the most important bands/albums ever been released?

Ron: Black Sabbath's "Master Of Reality", and "Sabotage".

Who is mainly responsible for the song writing? How could we imagine a Curse The Son’s song evolve?

Ron: On the early stuff, it was basically me writing all the parts, but now the music we're making is a result of us jamming as a band...it is a very cool process and we are enjoying it immensely.

There is a tragical story connecting Curse The Son’s history directly with the band Sufferghost. Would you be so kind to tell us?

Ron: Sufferghost had just finished recording our debut CD. Soon after our guitar player, Anthony Buhagiar suffered a burst aneurism in his heart. Due to complications he was left paraplegic. We all were devastated, we had worked so hard, and were really beginning to get a buzz going. After a long recovery time he picked up his guitar again and has since moved back to his hometown of Hayward,CA, he is playing in the band Burn Theeee Insects....I miss him terribly.

How did this event influence your thinking about life, friendship and making music?

Ron: When this all happened it was just unreal. It was impossible to even imagine...I believe he died on the operating table a few times. I can still remember the night his wife called me and told me what happened. I was destroyed. I stopped playing music immediately, had no interest or desire. My will was gone, my friend and brother Tone was never gonna come to my house to jam ever again. I did not want to play with anyone but him. A couple months passed and me and him were just talking about music. He told me to get out there and play. That I needed to play, and he was right. It makes you appreciate your time here a lot....you honestly never do know what is going to happen from one day to the next.

What is to be told about Sufferghost itself? Will it raise again?

Ron: We will be releasing the CD "Thaw" eventually. It is just to good to let go to waste. We want people to hear it. Tony being on the west coast, and us being on the east coast will make it tough to bring it back, but you never know. It would be awesome to play a show as Sufferghost.

Doom of any kind is and has always been underground, whether there is a living online scene meanwhile and a couple of events happening worldwide at this time. What do you prognosticate for the genre’s future and where do you see Curse The Son within the next years?

Ron: Honestly it's almost like you don't want to see the scene get to big, because as we all know, once a particular style of metal becomes BIG it gets shitty pretty fast. Bunch of trendy bands will slow down, and then it's over. I like the fact that stoner/doom or whatever you want to call it is a true underground thing. It reminds me of when I was a kid and the underground was where all the good shit was. Metallica, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Dark Angel, Destruction, you felt like you were a part of something special. There was all this great music happening, and it was our little secret. As far as where I see Curse the Son going....I've learned over the years that this is a hard business, it kicks your ass mentally..but I do hope that the next couple years for us will be a success!

Has the Doom scene to fear a commercial sellout as it's been happening to Black and Death Metal?

Ron: I don't think it could be possible. A lot of people just don't get the slow aspect of the music. This music is certainly more of a spiritual thing than anything else. So no, I don't fear a commercial sellout.

Is there a chance of meeting Curse The Son on European roads? What would be your dream package to be a part of?

Ron: I would love to play Europe. I have never been over there. Maybe someday, if we get some good tour support it would happen. How about Curse the Son opening, Witchfinder General(with Zeeb), Electric Wizard, Sleep, and then Sabbath headlines and destroys the universe!!

Spirit Descent - s/t (Demo)

Ist es frevelhaft, wenn man nach dem offiziellen Ableben von Warning nicht das übliche Trauerjahr einhält? Ich denke nicht, denn der moderne Doomhead hält sich im Vergleich zum Mob trotz ausgeprägter Lethargie nicht unnötig an so niederen Tätigkeiten wie Götzenhuldigung und Devotionalienentstaubung auf. Es fällt umso leichter, je aktiver man sich wie der Maulwurf durch den Untergrund schaufelt, um zielsicher mit der Nase auf einen richtig fetten Wurm zu stoßen. Dieser heißt in unserem Fall SPIRIT DESCENT. Das Trio aus deutschen Landen verlangt mir mit den Tracks der aktuellen Demo das eine oder andere Tränchen ab. Nicht aus Mitleid ob der neuerlichen Bemühungen einer jungen Band um Anerkennung in der explodierenden Doomszene. Vielmehr rückt das Trio naturgemäß in eine freigewordene Nische ein ohne dabei nur simpler Ersatz zu sein. Das haben die Jungs absolut nicht nötig, nicht bei der gebotenen Doompräsenz, die allen Freunden des gehobenen epischen Gesangs und schwerst schleppender Riffwellen a la Cathedral zu „Forest…“-Zeiten einen besonderen Hörgenuss bescheren sollte. „Land Of Tears“ und „A New Dawn“ warten mit brillianten Melodien auf, die dem einen Agonie und Pein, dem anderen totale Entspannung und Glückseeligkeit vermitteln. „The Path Of Doom“ gibt als dritter und letzter Titel unmissverständlich und treibend die Marschrichtung von SPIRIT DESCENT gen Doomolymp vor. Sicher ein hochgestecktes, aber erreichbares Ziel. Es bleibt abzuwarten, ob SPIRIT DESCENT die Erwartungen auf dem gerade entstehenden Debutalbum erfüllen können.
