EYEHATEGOD played two NYC shows with new drummer Aaron Hill

Last week, "Big Easy sludge all-stars" EYEHATEGOD brought their tour to NYC for their first two area shows since the tragic passing of drummer and founding member Joey LaCaze -- one at the Acheron on Saturday (11/16) and one at Saint Vitus on Thursday (11/14). After Dale Crover of the Melvins briefly filled in at Housecore Horror Film Fest, these shows were with LaCaze's permanent replacement, Aaron Hill.

Titled "Last City Zero", the eight-track, near 50-minute offering was produced by Sanford Parker at Electrical Audio, Soma Studios, 60 Psycho Hum and Nodferatu's Lair, and delivers a wholly cerebral, impossible-to-pinpoint kaleidoscopic synthesis of mechanical decomposition, atmospheric abnormalities, and poetic putrefaction.

A mysterious cooperative of lost souls, forged unwittingly by the impetuous forces of nature and altered states of consciousness, CORRECTIONS HOUSE is without control of their destiny. Boundless in their genre voyage, CORRECTIONS HOUSE embrace the unkind, the diseased, the forgotten, the morose, their lush anti-soundscrapes and shadowy verses -- at once beautifully hideous, graceful and terrifying -- a manifestation of societal ruin and psychological decay.

EYEHATEGOD: Band officially confirmes that LaCaze passed away two days after his 42nd birthday

Joseph LaCaze, drummer for the influential New Orleans metal band Eyehategod, has died, the band confirmed with a brief statement Wednesday morning (Aug. 28). LaCaze passed away two days after his 42nd birthday.

Along with guitarist Jimmy Bower, Mr. LaCaze founded the band in New Orleans, in 1988. Fronted by singer Mike IX Williams, Eyehategod was highly influential for its heavyweight, sludgy sound; the band had just completed a five-week run of European tour dates celebrating its 25th anniversary, with U.S. dates scheduled for the fall. Eyehategod appeared on an episode of HBO's Treme, in season three.

The band’s statement:

"Joseph M. LaCaze, New Orleans native and drummer for Eyehategod, Mystick Krewe of Clearlight and Outlaw Order passed away on Aug. 23rd in New Orleans after a very successful five week UK and European tour with EHG.

"He also performed ceremonial voodoo drumming and in numerous solo experimental electronic projects. Doctors confirmed to family members the cause as respiratory failure. He also suffered from severe long term asthma.

"An account is set up for the benefit of his daughter Lilith LaCaze. Checks can be made payable to the Lilith LaCaze or Joseph LaCaze donation fund at any Capital One Bank in any city."

EYEHATEGOD: Longtime drummer Joey LaCaze died earlier today!!!

"Longtime Eyehategod drummer Joey LaCaze died earlier today.

Invisible Oranges broke the story, receiving the information from a credible source of LaCraze's death. There is no word on the cause of his passing or any other further at this time.

LaCaze was with EYEHATEGOD since the band's inception on 4/20/88, and was also involved with other bands such as Outlaw Order, Ten Suicides, and Italian Cemetery Suicide.   Eyehategod had just completed a European run and were gearing up for a string of shows celebrating their 25th anniversary. Doom Metal Front is really shocked as we have spoken to him personally on the recent European Tour. They were currently preparing to release the long awaited 6th EYEHATEGOD full-length album.

We are back from EYEHATEGOD's 25 Years-Anniversary-Tour gig at Groovestation, Dresden(GER). It was an amazing 1,5 hours long Sludge-annihilation. We felt like 50 degree celsius and sweat run down our backs like rivers!

We've talked to Jimmy Bower, Mike Williams, Joey LaCaze, Brian Patton and Gary Mader about a quarter century being around and were played a snippet from a track of the upcoming album directly coming from Jimmy's iPhone.

EYEHATEGOD: 25 Jahre Sludge und mit neuer Platte auf Jubiläumstour

Kinder, wie die Zeit vergeht: Waren EyeHateGod im Jahre 1988 noch eine Band voller hungriger Jungspunde, haben sie 25 Jahre später geradezu ein eigenes Genre, den Sludge, erschaffen. Neben Crowbar oder Down gelten EyeHateGod daher als bedeutsame Größe der Metal-Szene von New Orleans. Als eigene musikalische Haupteinflüsse benennt die häufig EHG abgekürzte Formation The Melvins, The Obsessed, Black Flag und Black Sabbath. Die ungewöhnliche Namensgebung, Eye Hate God also „Auge Hass Gott“ basiert auf dem homophonen englischen Wörtern „Eye“ für „Auge“ und „I“ für „Ich“. Die sinngemäße Übersetzung des Namens lautet dementsprechend Ich hasse Gott. Dieser Name spiegelt dabei sowohl den zynischen Humor als auch den oft zitierten Nihilismus der Band wider. Gerade Letzterer ist mindestens genau so Markenzeichen der Band wie der harte Sound seit den Anfangstagen, bestehend aus grob-körnigen Gitarren und die von einer Kehlkopfentzündung geplagten Schreie des Frontmanns Michael Williams. Und das ist als Kompliment gemeint.

In den vergangenen 25 Jahren hat das Quartett außerdem mehrere Neubesetzungen, Streitigkeiten mit dem Label und sogar eine kurze Trennung überstanden. Und wozu? Um pünktlich zum Jubiläum mit einer neuen Platte zurück zukommen, die beweist, dass EyeHateGod auch ein Vierteljahrhundert später nichts von der Drive und dem Elan verloren haben, der sie seit 1988 antreibt.
