EARTH: Tenth studio recording, "Primitive And Deadly", to be released via Southern Lord in September. On European Tour in August!

Earth’s career, like its music, has always been a slow, deliberate progression. Each record slightly removed from the last, a constant refinement of a singular vision. Dylan Carlson has remained focused throughout on coaxing moments of strange beauty and reflection from “the riff”. This elemental foundation of rock is refracted, in their earliest recordings, through the prism of sheer volume & feedbacking drone or, in the twin Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light set from 2011 & 2012, via a sparse unraveling take on folk.

With Primitive and Deadly, Earth’s tenth studio collection, Carlson & long term foil, drummer Adrienne Davies, manage to pull off the trick of completing an Ouroborean creative cycle, 25 years in the making, whilst exploring new directions in Earth’s music. For the first time in their diverse second act, they allow themselves to be a ROCK band, freed of adornment and embellishment.   As much as Carlson’s guitar has always been the focal point of Earth’s music, it’s been surrounded by consistently diverse instrumentation. Here the dialog between Carlson and Davies drumming remains pivotal, underpinned by the sympathetic bass of Bill Herzog (Sunn 0))), Joel RL Phelps, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter) and thickened by additional layers of guitar from Brett Netson (Built To Spill, Caustic Resin) & Jodie Cox (Narrows). Perhaps the largest left turn on Primitive and Deadly, though, is prominence of guest vocalists Mark Lanegan and Rabia Shaheen Qazi (Rose Windows) who transform the traditionally free ranging meditations of Earth into something approaching traditional pop structures.

On "Rooks Across the Gates", a song stylistically the closest to the folk inspired modality of Angels of Darkness, Carlson stretches out into some of his most lyrical playing to date, creating an almost symbiotic relationship between his performance and the vocals of old friend Mark Lanegan. "From the Zodiacal Light", meanwhile, takes the late 60’s San Franciscan / freaked out jazz-rock transcendence of The Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull and quickly re-appropriates that sound into a musky torch song for the witching hour.

This contradictive tension between a band pushing themselves ever forward whilst surveying their history is reflected in the albums twin recording locales. The foundation of the record was laid in the mystic desert high lands of Joshua Tree, California where Earth recorded hour after hour of meditations on each tracks central theme at Rancho de la Luna. Upon returning to Seattle these were edited, arranged and expanded upon at Avast with the help of long-term collaborator Randall Dunn (who was previously at the helm for the Hex, The Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull and Hibernaculum sessions).

Thick, dense and overdriven, melodically rich & enveloping, Primitive and Deadly is Earth reaffirming their position as a singular point in the history of rock.

EAGLE TWIN: Kündigen UK & EU Tour Dates für April und Mai an! | Announce UK & EU Tour Dates this April and May

Salt Lake City-based heavy music duo EAGLE TWIN are force to be reckoned with, merging the immense talents of guitarist Gentry Densley (Iceburn, Ascend) with the thunderous percussion of Tyler Smith (formerly of Form of Rocket). Riff seekers in the UK and Europe can bask in their heavy rituals, here are the dates.

Fri 25.04.14 MelloMello, Liverpool, UK.

Fri 09.05.14 PMK, Innsbruck, Austria. (200)
Sat 10.05.14 Lofi, Milan, Italy.
Sun 11.05.14 Romandie, Lausanne, Switzerland.

Across two full-length albums a concept emerges, and on their latest album, entitled, "The Feather Tipped the Serpent’s Scale", the themes pick up right where the band’s acclaimed debut LP, "The Unkindness of Crows", left off. In this installment, the crows documented in the first album have battled the sun and were burned back down to earth as black snakes, the concept of the album focusing mainly on the snake and its various mythic and symbolic incarnations. Ultimately, the great ancestral snake is transformed from its lowly beginnings back into a bird soaring upon the thermals. Demonstrating the cyclical nature of being.

"The Feather Tipped The Serpent's Scale" was recorded with Randall Dunn at London Bridge Studio (as with the first album), the record boasts some of the most mesmerising and monstrous riff transformations from Eagle Twin to date.

Having seen them live many moons ago, I can attest to their monumental sonic force and power, demonstrating perfect symbiosis between guitar and drums. I really cannot wait for more people to see them!

Church Of Ra European Tour, featuring AMENRA, TREHA SEKTORI, OATHBREAKER and HESSIAN in April 2014

Three cult labels, and four phenomenal bands come together in 2014 to present a tour that should be one of the most anticipated live prosects of the year for lovers of heavy music...today it comes with real pleasure to make official the news of a Church Of Ra tour in 2014.

AMENRA, TREHA SEKTORI, OATHBREAKER and HESSIAN shall take to the road in April touring across Europe, starting and ending in France. Thanks to Neurot Recordings, Southern Lord and Deathwish Inc and a host of other sponsors.

Here's what AMENRA had to say about the tour...

"Friendship above all pushed us towards this moment in time. Now we'll travel the european roads together, to celebrate and share what we hold dearest in life. Life itself and our love for music.  Together, we'll step out of the darkness and into the light." - CHVE

As well as promoting their Neurot Recordings release, Mass V, AMENRA have just remastered and re-released Mass III and Mass IIII on LP and CD formats, so head on over to the following website to obtain and find out more: http://www.hypertensionrecords.com/store. Furthermore, they have decided to release a limited amount of live DVDs as a gesture towards their listeners and audiences worldwide, without whom they acknowledge, "we would be nothing more than a grain of salt in life's sea of tears". These are the live DVDs available; live at fortarock NL, live at AB brussels BE and live at de kreun, kortrijk BE. Colin H.Van Eeckhout took the time to record this remarkably personal interview for De Kreun's 'On Stage With' - it is both deeply moving and very revealing, we urge everyone to watch it:

Earlier this year, Hessian released their debut album Manégarmr through Southern Lord which was very well received indeed. The combined musical backgrounds of guitarist Levy Seynaeve (Amenra), drummer Tim Bryon (The Black Heart Rebellion), vocalist Bram Coussement and bass player Kenneth Vanhoutte fell effortlessly into place, pushing a sound that was at once pummeling, devouring and empowering. Named after the wolf which, in Norwegian mythology, devours the sun every night, Manégarmr focuses both sonically and lyrically on the endless cycles of destruction that are imminent to this life and the world in which we live. From the soaring take-off of “Ascension,” via the treacherous calm of central pieces “Vāmācāra” and “Father of Greed,” to the merciless onslaught that is “Mother of Time.” With towering guitars, frenzied drum patterns and savage vocals that sound like the howl of the lone wolf, Manègarmr is a furious blizzard of blackened metal, violently crashing into a maelstrom of ultra-metallic dark hardcore. Mixed by the infamous Tomas Skogsberg (Entombed, Unleashed, Dismember) at Sunlight Studios in Sweden and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, High on Fire, Nails), Manègarmr ultimately takes the listener on a journey that is at once haunting, draining and exhilarating.

Both the debut of LUMBAR (US) feat. Mike Scheidt & the NOOTHGRUSH/COFFINS split album out via Southern Lord on the 11th of November

LUMBAR
"The First and Last Days of Unwelcome"
Label: Southern Lord
Release: 11 November 2013

One of the year's most unexpected Doom Metal albums is also now one of 2013's most anticipated, as the debut LP from Pacific Northwestern trio LUMBAR is being prepared for arrival.

While this brutalising slow-motion trio boasts what some are referring to as “supergroup” status — containing members Aaron Edge (Himsa, Iamthethorn, Roareth, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth), Mike Scheidt (YOB) and Tad Doyle (Tad, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth) — LUMBAR was formed by these longtime friends for much more than simply creating riffs. The brainchild of Aaron Edge, LUMBAR came together earlier this year when the well-known guitarist/drummer/graphic designer was unexpectedly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. What would be his final musical endeavor before waves of rapidly-spreading pain engulfed him and extended hospital stays became more than frequent, is now his most imperative.

On LUMBAR's debut album, The First And Last Days Of Unwelcome, Edge is joined by Mike Scheidt and Tad Doyle, the latter of whom also shares rank in Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth with Aaron, who helped bring this intense and important project to fruition. The musical result is as diverse and destructive as one may expect from such a lineup, with the varied influence from this trio of musicians coalescing into seven organic and tonally oppressive movements. Ethereal ghostly passages and spacious expanses of minimalistic disharmony come to an end in sonic obliteration through mesmerising and pulverizing, as an array of distinct vocal mantras echo from the heart of it all.

Southern Lord will release The First And Last Days Of Unwelcome on LP and digital formats in the UK/EU on November 11th, followed by a CD version direct from the band and a cassette version via Holy Mountain, with all of the band’s proceeds going to aid Edge’s medical expenses and treatments.

NOOTHGRUSH/COFFINS
Split-Album
Label: Southern Lord
Release: 11 November 2013

Southern Lord bring us a split album from two of the heaviest sludge bands that ever existed! Coffins from Tokyo, Japan churn out the filthiest, nastiest noise heard in a long long time, whilst Oakland, California's sludge pioneers Noothgrush return from the grave to teach us a lesson in joylessness. Featuring artwork by Josh Graham, this utterly oppressive slab of crushing doom shall be officially released on 12" via Southern Lord in the UK/EU on 11 November. This is a split of frankly extraordinary calibre and superlative weight, two heavyweights of the doom world colliding with enormous results.

Noothgrush return with their first studio recording since 1998, and the disdain, the disgust… It hasn’t faded one bit. Their gruesome sludge is rooted in the real life, in the misery, hatred and despair of humanity – there are no traces of fantasy or psychedelic moments of horror movie nostalgia in this amoral cut of agonising doom. With Dino Somesse, the man who personified anguish in 90’s crust sludge golden calves Dystopia, joining the band on vocals, this is a rare ignition of the scum-ridden sludge sound which America haemorrhaged during the last decade of the millennium. Noothgrush's side of the split opens with crawling, pained riffs punctuated with sparse percussion, and then the weight of the world comes down. Rasping vocals, disturbing samples, and songs which grab you by the throat and open your eyes to mad-made hell.

Coffins, the Japanese masters of rockin’ death doom, have (once again) succeeded in making exactly the kind of music you would feel comfortable having as your soundtrack whilst riding a Harley Davidson into hell like you own the place. Their hammer comes down heavier than ever on these two tracks, wielding monstrous groove with downright foul tactics. Guttural is an understatement – what comes out of the mouth of vocalist Uchino is a tar-thick gargle with the stench of death, laying to waste whatever living creatures inhale it. Plants will wither, animals scurry, and metal fans… will bang their heads! Channelling the old school death metal filth of Autopsy with an altogether more rollicking lurch, this is horrific doom metal to rage to.

PELICAN announce first new album in four years - "Forever Becoming" due this October

Pelican - "Forever Becoming"
Southern Lord
Release: 14th October 2013

PELICAN, the Chicago-based quartet whose instrumental excursions to the confluence of caustic heaviness and cathartic melody pioneered a subgenre, have announced their first full album in four years, Forever Becoming, due October 15th on forward-thinking metal imprint Southern Lord. Recorded at Electrical Audio with Chris Common (who engineered the group’s last album as well as albums by Chelsea Wolfe and These Arms Are Snakes), Forever Becoming is an immense, speaker-rattling meditation on the acceptance of mortality and its place in the eternal cycle. Composed of eight songs (full tracklist below), the album boasts a sonic palette that veers from pummeling metal, to contemplative ambience, to melodic catharsis all with landmark grace.

Following a hiatus that saw the departure of founding guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec and the arrival of new second guitarist Dallas Thomas (also of The Swan King), the forthcoming album is the work of a wholly revitalized unit, sounding more focused and assured than ever. The current lineup’s undeniable chemistry was forged in front of crowds at festival appearances, including Bonnaroo, Roadburn, and Maryland Death Fest, as well as a handful of headlining club shows. Pelican return to the road in support of the new album with a host of European dates kicking off this week.  Then this Autumn they shall continue their touring activities with reigning post-hardcore stalwarts Coliseum, focusing on the East Coast (the band’s first tour of the area since 2009), in addition to a coveted slot at this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest.

SOUTHERN LORD have announced the exciting news of their European expansion, starting with a European distribution office based in Amsterdam. Bringing faster and cheaper shipping and service (and the crushing noise that comes with it) to all its European customers and distributors (specifically, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Austria), we can already see the praiseworthy effects of this venture – meaning it will now be a lot easier to get your hands on vinyl copies of their back catalogue, current releases from Dead In The Dirt, All Pigs Must Die and Centuries as well as the upcoming releases from Pelican, A Storm of Light, BL’AST! and inevitably many, many more.

Read more about Southern Lord's current and upcoming releases here:

A STORM OF LIGHT - "NATION TO FLAMES"

TO BE RELEASED ON ON SEPTEMBER 30th

New York metal alchemists, A STORM OF LIGHT, will unleash their long-anticipated new studio offering this Fall! Entitled "Nations To Flames", the 11-track follow up to the band’s critically-lauded 2011 opus, As The Valley Of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade, was recorded with Travis Kammeyer (OCOAI, Generation Of Vipers) at Fahrenheit Studios in Johnson City, Tennessee, mixed with Matt Bayles (Isis, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Botch, Mastodon) at Red Room Recording in Seattle, Washington and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, From Ashes Rise, Nails) at Audiosiege in Portland, Oregon.
Additionally, Nations to Flames features Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil and Indian/Nachtmystium’s Will Lindsay on select tracks.
Centered around the apex of human failure, Nations To Flames bears witness to the fall of all governments, all nations, and all religions. The record is both musically and thematically captivating and marks the STORM collective’s darkest, most immediately punishing creation to date.
Comments A STORM OF LIGHT founding guitarist/vocalist Josh Graham “These songs are much more focused. Even the more ‘epic’ songs are shorter but still accomplish the same journey as the longer songs used to. We’ve ditched the rock elements of the last record and  let our early influences of Killing Joke, Bad Brains, Metallica and Crash Worship seep in. We are bringing back the intensity of Black Ocean but with the speed and precision ore akin to our metal influences. While there are still some slower/sludgy tunes, some songs are twice as fast as the older material.”
