E-Drone band LOCRIAN and Postrockers TRUE WIDOW will be playing at Roadburn 2014
Roadburn have announced pitch-black experimental avant-drone trio LOCRIAN will be enshrouding the 2014 festival in their blackened pall. Playing what will be their very first show on European soil, the grim Chicago post-industrialists will be bringing their nebulous drones, uncomfortable ambience and buried black-metallic shrieks to Roadburn at Het Patronaat in Tilburg, The Netherlands on Thursday April 10th.
Since their 2005 origins as the duo of André Foisy and Terence Hannum, and across six critically acclaimed full length releases and numerous collaborations and EP’s, Locrian have been in a constant state of evolution, continually striving to express the inexpressible, creating soundscapes that have encompassed the spectrum between the white-hot furious noise and metallic clang of early Industrial music, the bleak introspection of the Post-Punk years and the hypnotic repetition and droning melodicism of the classic Krautrock bands.
With the addition of percussionist Steven Hess for 2010's universally well-received The Crystal World the sonic palette of the band has expanded, leading to the significantly more rhythmic, terrifyingly bright spaciousness of Locrian's latest release, and first original full-length recording Return To Annihilation, which came out on Relapse Records in June this year.

Texas' finest purveyors of melancholy heaviness, True Widow, will infuse Roadburn festival 2014 with songs of sadness and gorgeous crumbling distortion. Their relentlessly tired and dark sound is reminiscent of Codeine mixed with 16 Horsepower, but with more of a metal background than either band.
Usually you know a band is good when critics have to make up new words to describe their style and that is definitely the case with "doomgazers" True Widow. While their sound isn't actually very doomy or shoegaze-y, it is beautifully dark and crumbly and catchy.
True Widows' latest album Circumambulation (out on Relapse Records) is a tiny bit brighter and clearer than their first two records, but holds true to the darkly-repetitive-riffs-slowly-baked-in-a-furnace-of-distortion approach they have pioneered.
Trading off male and female vocals, equally world-weary, True Widow use simplicity of songwriting and arranging to emphasize the moodiness and weight of their compositions. Their attention to detail, obvious love of metal (even though they only ever hint at it), and addictive songs will find a very receptive audienced when they take the Roadburn stage on Thursday, April 12th at Het Patronaat in Tilburg, The Netherlands.
