INDIAN confirmed for Roadburn Festival 2014! New track from blackened doom day-ruiners online

The Roadburn festival is pleased to announce the addition of Chicago-based doom warriors, INDIAN. The band have been purveyors of the finest blackened doom for over a decade, and this month will see the release of their latest opus, From All Purity, via Relapse Records.

Directional, a brand new track taken from their new album From All Purity, has just been released and can be listened to here on Soundcloud.

From All Purity will see its official release via Relapse Records on CD/LP/digital in North America on January 21st, 2014, Germany/Benelux/Finland on January 17th, and in the UK/World on January 20th. Preorder your copy of From All Purity via Relapse here.

Roadburn will be playing host to INDIAN on Saturday 12th of April, at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands, when the crushing four piece will bring their sonic offerings to life. Roadburn Festival 2014 will run for four days from Thursday, April 10th to Sunday, April 13th 2014 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Tickets for the traditional Afterburner event on Sunday, April 13th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands are still available. For more info, please visit www.roadburn.com.

Recorded at Electrical Audio and Soma Studios in Chicago with engineer/co-producer Sanford Parker (Minsk, Nachtmystium, Yob, Samothrace), the six-track From All Purity is a taunting exercise in auditory hate and despair; a physically and psychologically jarring collision of tar-black doom, sprawling waves of noise and scathing outbursts of pain. Said Heavy Planet in an early review of the record, “This is a band wringing their dirty hands and tossing bricks, but they're hardly aimless. These six tracks hit the spite-nail straight on the head, driven directly into your senses. I didn't think anyone could improve upon [2011’s] Guiltless. Somehow, these dudes have even less remorse than they did years three years ago.” From All Purity is the true antithesis of easy listening.

Invisible Oranges fittingly crowns the tune, “a militaristic, doom-impending march,” furthering that “walls of thick noise-haze create a bleak, hopeless atmosphere overlaid with harsh distorted screams.” Happy 2014. Additionally, you can still check out “Rhetoric Of No” here.

Sludge pioneers -(16)- confirmed for ROADBURN Festival 2014

-(16)- from Los Angeles have been confirmed for the 2014 Roadburn festival in Tilburg, the Netherlands (see flyer below).

Over the last two decades, Californian veterans -(16)- have been pioneering heavy-as-hell, ill tempered sludge metal, alongside fellow luminaries Buzzov*en, Eyehategod and Crowbar (among others).

Despite all the anguish, pain and countless lineup changes that 20 years brought, -(16)- remained a dependable source of gutsy, misery infested, torturous sludge, captured on albums like Drop Out, Zoloft Smile and Deep Cuts from Dark Clouds.

Whether its the band's mid tempo, aggressive metal assault, their sludgy dissonance or aggro-punk-hardcore filth, -(16)- spits it out with hateful, jaw-punching glee - thriving on chugging guitars, grinding bass and growling vocals that drive home the point like a blast of scuzzed-up vitriol.

Turn up, tune down, give up...

-(16)- will be playing at the 2014 Roadburn festival on Saturday, April 12th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Other Relapse Records artists confirmed for Roadburn 2014 are Lord Dying, ASG, Locrian, Windhand, True Widow and Inter Arma.

LORD DYING and ASG confirmed for ROADBURN festival 2014

If there's one thing that unites everyone at the Roadburn festival it's riffs. Portland, Oregon hessians Lord Dying have knocked-out some of the tastiest, meatiest, riffs of recent times via their skull-cracking caveman metal debut album Summon The Faithless on Relapse Records, and so it is that the Roadburn festival announced that they will be playing Roadburn 2014 on Thursday, April 10th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Lord Dying’s debut album Summon The Faithless is a brutalist primitive take on the doomed fist-pounding head-banging mania of High On Fire, suffused with the rusty razor edge of early death metal. Scything, bludgeoning guitars rip and tear through flesh and bone as frontman Erik Olson spits bile like the bastard offspring of Cronos and Matt Pike.

North Carolina's ASG are currently celebrating their highest charting and most critically acclaimed album to date, their breakthrough release Blood Drive, which is their first for Relapse Records and fourth album to date. Blood Drive is a killer sludgy, psychedelic, hard rock and Southern (stoner) rock hybrid that brings to mind bands like Torche, old Queens of the Stone Age or Jane's Addiction with a fierce Southern twang.

ASG write big groovy riffs and super catchy hooks. Frontman Jason Shi's distinctive melodic voice adds a poppy element with some gruffness thrown in for good measure!

ASG will bring their straight up, big, bright sounds to Roadburn Festival 2014 on Thursday, April 10 at Het Patronaat in Tilburg, The Netherlands. ASG has always been a relentless live-act from the get go, and it will be an absolute delight to see the band effortlessly slip from swirling psychedelica to woozy stonerrock to big riffing, almost arena-like heavy rock to swampy Southern rock.

E-Drone band LOCRIAN and Postrockers TRUE WIDOW will be playing at Roadburn 2014

Roadburn have announced pitch-black experimental avant-drone trio LOCRIAN will be enshrouding the 2014 festival in their blackened pall. Playing what will be their very first show on European soil, the grim Chicago post-industrialists will be bringing their nebulous drones, uncomfortable ambience and buried black-metallic shrieks to Roadburn at Het Patronaat in Tilburg, The Netherlands on Thursday April 10th.

Since their 2005 origins as the duo of André Foisy and Terence Hannum, and across six critically acclaimed full length releases and numerous collaborations and EP’s, Locrian have been in a constant state of evolution, continually striving to express the inexpressible, creating soundscapes that have encompassed the spectrum between the white-hot furious noise and metallic clang of early Industrial music, the bleak introspection of the Post-Punk years and the hypnotic repetition and droning melodicism of the classic Krautrock bands.

With the addition of percussionist Steven Hess for 2010's universally well-received The Crystal World the sonic palette of the band has expanded, leading to the significantly more rhythmic, terrifyingly bright spaciousness of Locrian's latest release, and first original full-length recording Return To Annihilation, which came out on Relapse Records in June this year.

Locrian’s latest album Return To Annihilation is streaming in its entirety via Bandcamp here.

Texas' finest purveyors of melancholy heaviness, True Widow, will infuse Roadburn festival 2014 with songs of sadness and gorgeous crumbling distortion. Their relentlessly tired and dark sound is reminiscent of Codeine mixed with 16 Horsepower, but with more of a metal background than either band.

Usually you know a band is good when critics have to make up new words to describe their style and that is definitely the case with "doomgazers" True Widow. While their sound isn't actually very doomy or shoegaze-y, it is beautifully dark and crumbly and catchy.

True Widows' latest album Circumambulation (out on Relapse Records) is a tiny bit brighter and clearer than their first two records, but holds true to the darkly-repetitive-riffs-slowly-baked-in-a-furnace-of-distortion approach they have pioneered.

Trading off male and female vocals, equally world-weary, True Widow use simplicity of songwriting and arranging to emphasize the moodiness and weight of their compositions. Their attention to detail, obvious love of metal (even though they only ever hint at it), and addictive songs will find a very receptive audienced when they take the Roadburn stage on Thursday, April 12th at Het Patronaat in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

INTER ARMA and WINDHAND confirmed for Roadburn Festival 2014

Following last week's announcement of Loop as the main headliner for Roadburn 2014, the festival is excited to report that Relapse Records artists WINDHAND and INTER ARMA have also been confirmed for next years event, set for April10 − 13, 2014 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, the Netherlands.

Walter Hoeijmakers from Roadburn: "Windhand’s S/T was definitely THEE psych/doom album of 2012, while anticipation of the band's upcoming album on Relapse is reaching a crescendo that will continue to build throughout the year and culminate in their main stage set on Saturday, April 12 at Roadburn 2014. Inter Arma's "Sky Burial" is a serious contender for this year's Roadburn Festival-related album of the year. Both Windhand and Inter Arma seem poised to rank among the regal line of iconic Relapse bands, and Roadburn is proud to welcome both bands on Saturday, April 12 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands.”

Richmond, Virginia's WINDHAND cut their teeth worshipping at Iommi's school of a thousand riffs, fusing classic churning doom as smooth as melted chocolate with Electric Wizard-ish bong-cloud obscured psychedelia. Sparking your natural highness, the band locks into a mesmerizing sprawl of epic, doomic heaviness, a trancelike reverence that inspires lethargic, hypnotic head banging and is embellished with enough hazy psych to be a tripped-out soundtrack for some obscure war on drugs propaganda film. Meanwhile, vocalist Dorthia Cottrell's hellish howl beckons from the distance, swathed in distortion, transcending any earthly ideas of gender, and positioning the band firmly at the top of the pile of the current crop of female fronted metal outfits.

Windhand will release “Soma”, their 2nd album on Relapse Records on September 13 in the Benelux, GAS and Finland and on September 16 in the UK and Europe. The album was recorded & mixed by the band's own Garrett Morris at The Darkroom & mastered by James Plotkin, in their hometown of Richmond, VA.

Also emerging (like Windhand) from the seemingly ever-fertile metal breeding grounds of Richmond, Virginia, INTER ARMA sports a sound that's difficult to pin down, as it continually changes and surprises with each passing album track. "Sky Burial" starts with a strong dose of the industrial infused black metal of "Volcano"-era Satyricon, then takes a decidedly Pink Floydian left turn for the next two tracks (the first is acoustic and the second of which culminates in an unexpectedly raucous blast of Cascadian black metal). They then introduce truly hellish sounding occult doom followed by caustic, repetitive noise rock in the vein of Unsane. They continue with epic, abrasive, majestic doom with vintage Gibby Haynes-style menacing vocals into another foreboding acoustic track and cap the album off with the title track, a noisy, doomy, mathy, blackened rock and roll experience that is rippling with evil and menace. Their live set will be a constantly evolving, emotionally devastating experience that is sure to leave us all uncomfortably numb.
