Biography:

OPHIS [greek: serpent] was founded in the German harbour city of Hamburg in late 2001, as an outlet for its members very own darker sides: an abyssic immersion of slow monolithic Doom Metal and raw, nihilistic and staggering old school Death Metal.
The band steadily became a solid institution among Doom-fans worldwide, collecting a loyal following by constantly playing live all over Europe. After the release of their debut album “Stream of Misery” in 2007, OPHIS toured with Pantheist and Skepticism. Their sophomore record “Withered Shades” (2010) was praised by the press as one of the best Death/Doom records of the past decade and even won the 2nd place in Metalstorm’s “best extreme Doom album award”, and followed by a tour alongside Ahab and Esoteric.
Recently, Cyclone Empire re-released the debut album and the first EP as a compilation entitled “Effigies of Desolation”, which was accompanied by yet another European tour, this time with Evoken.
OPHIS is musically rooted in the early 90s, yet NOT a retro band, as they push their musical progress onward with every release. This tension grants OPHIS their own niche in a scene dominated by trends, which the band always refused to follow. Lyrically OPHIS are – unusual for a Doom band – observers of society, sometimes even with political undertones. But also personal lyrics dealing with the inner struggles of the members can be found.

OPHIS [griechisch: Schlange] wurden Ende 2001 in der deutschen Hafenstadt Hamburg gegründet, als eine Art Ventil für die dunklen Seiten der Bandmitglieder: eine hässliche Verschmelzung von langsamem monolithischen Doom Metal und rohem, nihilistisch gefärbten und walzendem Death Metal.
Die Band hat sich über die Jahre zu einer unabdingbaren Institution der globalen Doomszene entwickelt und durch etliche Touren eine beachtliche Fanbase erspielt. Nach dem Release ihres Debütalbums “Stream of Misery” (2007) waren OPHIS mit Pantheist und Skepticism on the road. Der Nachfolger “Withered Shades” (2010) wurde von der Presse gar als seines der besten Death/Doom-Werke des Jahrzehnts erkohren und beispielsweise auf den zweiten Platz im Metalstorm-Magazin in der Kategorie “best extreme Doom album award” auf Platz 2 gevotet. Erneut folgte eine Tour, dieses Mal mit Ahab und Esoteric.
2013 haben dann Cyclone Empire das Debütalbum und die erste EP “Nostrae Mortis Signaculum” als Compilation unter dem Titel “Effigies of Desolation” als 2-CD-Re-Release veröffentlicht, was durch eine Europatour mit EVOKEN erneut supportet wurde.
OPHIS sind zwar musikalisch in den 90ern verwurzelt, sind dabei allerdings bei weitem keine Retroband, da sie ihren ureigenen Sound konstant und konsequent von Release zu Release weiterentwickeln. Dies beschert den Jungs so etwas wie eine eigene Nische in einer Szene, die durchaus dominiert ist von Trends…aber mit Trends hatten und haben OPHIS rein gar nichts am Hut! Textlich behandeln OPHIS durchaus für eine Doom-Band ungewöhnliche Themen, wenn sie sich als kritische Betrachter unserer Gesellschaft offenbaren, teils gar mit politischen Untertönen. Aber natürlich gibt es auch Songs, die sich mit den persönlichen und alltäglichen inneren Kämpfen der Bandmitglieder befassen.

We had offers from several other companies, and pretty good ones, too. We were also satisfied with the label we had before. So you see: they did something very right!!
We are as happy as a Doom band can be to release our upcoming album “ABHORRENCE IN OPULENCE” on Cyclone Empire, because they have the modus operandi of big, professional companies, and at the same time the ethics of devoted underground labels. COFFINS confirm US Tour & Return to MDF

Following their widest-reaching LP to date in 2013's The Fleshland, Tokyo's COFFINS have confirmed a new American invasion this Spring.

COFFINS will bring their diseased, suffocating death-doom decimation back to this side of the Pacific once again in May with a special mini-tour, marking a four-year gap since their previous stateside visit. Bringing forth bulldozing hymns from The Fleshland and a brutal back-catalog of mid-paced gravedigging metal, COFFINS will plunder Chicago, Cleveland, Brooklyn and Philadelphia with a recently revamped lineup, beginning May 18th. Relapse Records signs ATRIARCH (Portland/USA)

Relapse Records announce the signing of Portland, OR blackened Death/Doom quartet ATRIACH. Formed in 2009, ATRIACH (Lenny Smith - Vocals, Brooks Blackhawk - Guitars, Maxamillion - Drums, Joe Wickström - Bass) have released two full lengths including Forever the End in 2011 via Seventh Rule (stream) and Ritual of Passing 2012 via Profound Lore (stream) plus a split with Alaric on 20 Buck Spin.

The band will enter the studio this June with famed producer Billy Anderson (Sleep, Eyehategod, Agalloch) to record their third full-length and Relapse debut which is sure to be their most ambitious and darkest album to date.

The group commented on the upcoming material: "We are constantly evolving as artists and we want to do something new with each release. Having said that it will always be dark and heavy and honestly reflect how we feel. Self-titled LP from Finish Death/Doom Metal band WARD released

Finland’s downtempo heavyweights WARD have been stirring their unique musical mixture already since 2005, but only after two smaller releases and a reasonable amount of live performances are they ready to bring out their long-awaited debut full-length.

Building from the atmospheric melodies of doom metal, raw sound and morbidness of early crust and the primitive force and heaviness of old-school death metal, the self-titled LP of these Tampere-based long runners consists of four tracks and nearly 36 minutes of unnaturally heavy darkness. One of the tracks, pitch black “SELF MADE HELL” can be found at the moment in the WARD bandcamp, as well as two tracks from their earlier releases.

After almost two years of completely analogue recording, mixing and mastering in the band's bassist's own Black Floyd's Studios, WARD LP was released in December 2013 in collaboration with four Finnish independent labels and is only available on black vinyl with a pressing of 500 pcs. New album "Sumerian Chants" of Italian Doom Metal band Enoch released

Satanath Records co-release with Niberu Records (label from Russia) the new album "Sumerian Chants" of Italian Doom Metal band Enoch released in the last days of 2013.

SUMERIAN CHANTS is Enoch's last studio work. The 8-tracks is a blend of old-school doom and death metal, with a well-defined sound, thus far from polished and flat-sounding modern productions. Sumerian and Babylonian myths play a fundamental role in Enoch’s music, linking all the songs with oriental melodies, using byzantine scales as something of similar but still different from other oriental melody patterns used by bands as Nile or Orphaned Land. The final result is a constant background feeling of dark ancient landscapes, giving something new and unique.

Enoch hails from Italy dating back their roots in 1998 and “Sumerian Chants” is the fourth studio work, following milestones as “Enuma Elish La Nabu Shamu”, “Tetragrammaton” and the EP “The Dreaming City”. All the releases have always been hailed by positive reviews from many ‘zines, leading the band to continue the songwriting keeping a firm hold on the underground, where the band itself was born and want to resist.

Finnish doomy Dark Metal band 0 X í S T is offering their digital discography for free / name you price downloading at 0xíst bandcamp page. This offer will be valid throughout January 2014.

In other news, the band is rehearsing material for their second full-length album. This will be the first 0xíst release to include bassist Sameli Köykkä (ex-Colosseum) & guitarist Juhani Jokisalo (Apocryphal Voice). Oblique To All Paths is a beautifully haunting and grim piece of sprawling doom metal…the perfect soundtrack to a desolate, barren winter. The album will see its official release on CD, 2LP and digital formats via Relapse Records on January 21st in North America, January 20th in the UK/World, and January 17th in Germany/Benelux/Finland.

AS AUTUMN CALLS: New album, "Cold, Black & Everlasting", of Doom/Death band from Canada available now

AS AUTUMN CALLS creates dark, melodic, melancholic, death/doom. The band was formed in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada in 2005. After 3 years of writing together the band recorded their first full length album titled "An Autumn Departure". The album contained 10 tracks of depressing death doom but was never released.

In the spring of 2009 AS AUTUMN CALLS began writing and recording a three song EP titled "Emotionless". "Emotionless" saw the band move towards a darker, bleaker sound. The EP was recorded and mixed by AS AUTUMN CALLS and mastered by Sardonic Moon Studio in Sudbury, ON. The album was self-released in December 2009 as a professional CD-R.

In the summer of 2010 the band welcomed drummer Darren (Finnr's Cane, Wolven Ancestry) to the line-up. During this time the band also re-recorded "An Autumn Departure" and released it through The Northern Cold Productions as a limited edition cassette in March 2011. "An Autumn Departure" was also released on CD with all new album artwork in May 2011.

In the Fall of 2011 guitarist Brendan joined the line-up. The band a full length album titled "Cold, Black & Everlasting" out, which continues to push forward the musical direction of AS AUTUMN CALLS. Release date was late October 2013.

COFFINS: Re-issue of all their splits, compilations and EPs on a double CD in January 2014

In January 2014 Hammerheart Records will release this cool re-issue on jewel-case double-CD for the price of a regular CD. COFFIN's killer compilation “Ancient Torture” collects all their splits, compilation, EP’s released until 2010 on two great soundings discs. Almost two hours, including covers of Asphyx, Pungent Stench, Venom and Carnage. Coffins just released their new album “The Fleshland” on Relapse Records and feedback has been tremendous. MOURNING BELOVETH have released their 1st official music video

Here's the 1st official music video of the Irish Doom/Death Metal Band MOURNING BELOVETH, featuring the track "Theories Of Old Bones" from their album "Formless", which is the band's greatest release so far.



To make a music video seems quite easy at todays times, but there was a serious problem about this song, which clocks in at 16 minutes length. Usual for an epic band like MOURNING BELOVETH but fairly unusual for a music video. Here's what Darren, singer of the band, has to say about this great video and song:

"It wasn't going to be an easy task to shoot a video for one of our songs, in the main due to their length. The story was already there in the lyrics of the song it was a matter of putting visuals to it. The lyrics ask questions on our existence, are we just here to pass time or to use it, is it a mere heavy existence we go through each day counting the days to our death or is there a purpose to all this...or do we have a choice? I read somewhere about christians in the old days who carried a pouch made of newborn lambskin around their necks to carry the nails for their coffin upon their death and it struck a chord of how fatalistic some people are. The video itself is perhaps a journey through a half dream, a moment in the pit of existence where life has drifted away to some far off point inside leaving the body to automatic ruin. LICREST: Fresh oldschool Death/Doom Metal from the States

There is not much information about the band LICREST from the USA but "Dooooooom!" to be read on their homepage. Listen to and download their self-released debut album, "Devoid Of Meaning", which was released on the 25th of August. Serves oldschool Death/Doom Metal tunes in the vein of early My Dying Bride and Katatonia, in conversation with Pete Steel and contemporaries. The gothic influence seems obvious.
