Nach drei Jahren meldet sich die Berliner Band ALBEZ DUZ mit einem neuen Album zurück, das den großen Vorbildern aus den frühen 90er Jahren nicht nur zu huldigen weiß, sondern dem mittlerweile verwaschenen Stil der frühen TIAMAT, PARADISE LOST, ANATHEMA oder MY DYING BRIDE mit "The Coming Of Mictlan" ein zur Ehre gereichendes neues Kapitel hinzufügt.
Vor allem denjenigen, welche immer noch um Pete Steel und die mit seinem Ableben ad acta gelegten TYPE O NEGATIVE trauern, sei ALBEZ DUZ neuestes Werk dringend ans dunkle, leiderfüllte Herz gelegt. Gerade auch weil die Stimme unwahrscheinlich nahe an das Vorbild heran kommt, ohne wie bei so vielen Nachahmern lächerlich gekünstelt zu wirken. Die Kompositionen bedienen sich gekonnt gotisch-düsterer Stilmittel und bauen eine unglaublich dichte Atmosphäre auf, die durchaus auch an die episch ausgefeilten Stücke von THE VISION BLEAK erinnern, ohne nur einen Fuß neben den doomig-zähen Klangpfad zu setzen. Die instrumentale und die Produktions-Messlatte wurden überhaupt sehr hoch angesetzt. Da stört es nicht einmal, dass sich ein Cover von Tanika Tikaram in die Tracklist geschlichen hat. "Modern Twist In My Sobriety" ist in der Version von ALBEZ DUZ sogar ein ausgesprochen Doom-affines Stück geworden. Meine persönlichen Anspieltipps sind "Fire Wings" und ""Mictlan". Anno 2014 schließen ALBEZ DUZ gekonnt die klaffende Lücke, die sich in den letzten zwanzig Jahren zwischen Gothic und Doom Metal geschoben hat. (SM)

This band brings back great memories from the 90s around the time we heard Type O Negative, only this is a lot more atmospheric, dark and intriguing too. Music of this texture is rarely found these days. This is moody, melancholic music with a dark twist. It's heavy, gloomy and soulful at the same time. It's vaguely comparable to the bands from the 90s period such as Tiamat, Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride and of course, the great and much-missed Type O Negative. Not anymore - Albez Duz is here, taking the occult and gothic atmosphere and infusing it into music that's epic, grand and ominous in a deceptive way. This is as accessible as you want it to be. This is something that came to be known as Dark Metal or in other words Doom or Doom Rock - one thing that remains consistent with any descriptor is the sublime quality of music and emotions.

OPHIS [greek: serpent] was founded in the German harbour city of Hamburg in late 2001, as an outlet for its members very own darker sides: an abyssic immersion of slow monolithic Doom Metal and raw, nihilistic and staggering old school Death Metal.
The band steadily became a solid institution among Doom-fans worldwide, collecting a loyal following by constantly playing live all over Europe. After the release of their debut album “Stream of Misery” in 2007, OPHIS toured with Pantheist and Skepticism. Their sophomore record “Withered Shades” (2010) was praised by the press as one of the best Death/Doom records of the past decade and even won the 2nd place in Metalstorm’s “best extreme Doom album award”, and followed by a tour alongside Ahab and Esoteric.
Recently, Cyclone Empire re-released the debut album and the first EP as a compilation entitled “Effigies of Desolation”, which was accompanied by yet another European tour, this time with Evoken.
OPHIS is musically rooted in the early 90s, yet NOT a retro band, as they push their musical progress onward with every release. OPHIS aus Hamburg sind eine der besten, extremsten und (immer noch) hoffnungsvollsten Doom-Bands in Deutschland und darüber hinaus. CYCLONE EMPIRE heißt diese Underground-Kultband mit ihrem düsteren, brachialen, tonnenschweren trostlosen und doch schönen (Funeral-)Doom/Death in ihrer kleinen Familie willkommen.

OPHIS [griechisch: Schlange] wurden Ende 2001 in der deutschen Hafenstadt Hamburg gegründet, als eine Art Ventil für die dunklen Seiten der Bandmitglieder: eine hässliche Verschmelzung von langsamem monolithischen Doom Metal und rohem, nihilistisch gefärbten und walzendem Death Metal.
Die Band hat sich über die Jahre zu einer unabdingbaren Institution der globalen Doomszene entwickelt und durch etliche Touren eine beachtliche Fanbase erspielt. Nach dem Release ihres Debütalbums “Stream of Misery” (2007) waren OPHIS mit Pantheist und Skepticism on the road. Der Nachfolger “Withered Shades” (2010) wurde von der Presse gar als seines der besten Death/Doom-Werke des Jahrzehnts erkohren und beispielsweise auf den zweiten Platz im Metalstorm-Magazin in der Kategorie “best extreme Doom album award” auf Platz 2 gevotet. Erneut folgte eine Tour, dieses Mal mit Ahab und Esoteric.

Dies beschert den Jungs so etwas wie eine eigene Nische in einer Szene, die durchaus dominiert ist von Trends…aber mit Trends hatten und haben OPHIS rein gar nichts am Hut! Textlich behandeln OPHIS durchaus für eine Doom-Band ungewöhnliche Themen, wenn sie sich als kritische Betrachter unserer Gesellschaft offenbaren, teils gar mit politischen Untertönen. Aber natürlich gibt es auch Songs, die sich mit den persönlichen und alltäglichen inneren Kämpfen der Bandmitglieder befassen.

We had offers from several other companies, and pretty good ones, too. We were also satisfied with the label we had before. So you see: they did something very right!!
We are as happy as a Doom band can be to release our upcoming album “ABHORRENCE IN OPULENCE” on Cyclone Empire, because they have the modus operandi of big, professional companies, and at the same time the ethics of devoted underground labels. Fresh but Hearty!

On their debut-album “Insidious Black Sea” IRON WALRUS present themselves as an incarnated Doom-/Sludge-/Noise-/Rock-Monster that can’t and doesn’t want deny its musical foster-fathers ST. VITUS, UNSANE, EYEHATEGOD, GOATSNAKE, HELMET and QUICKSAND. But at the same time the band shows proof that music “that raises hell” not necessarily has to originate from America or Scandinavia. Brutal riffing, banging bass-hooks, driving drums and aggressive shouting – that is IRON WALRUS.

Only started in May 2013, it was not the plan of the young team of old professionals to approach things in a calm and relaxed way. After just a short time, two demos appeared on Reverbnation, getting a considerable amount of clicks and when the band shared the stage with TORCHE on their first show, it had everything except a small and intimate atmosphere.

In October 2013 IRON WALRUS had already enough songs written and arranged to be able to enter the studio with Robin Völkert (DEAN DIRG, UNION OF SLEEP, THE NOW DENIAL) and record “Insidious Black Sea”. A couple of weeks and one album-recording later in November, the band was back on stage with PENTAGRAM and UNION OF SLEEP to play a couple of shows.

It doesn’t have to be mentioned that such a racy and confident appearance remains hidden for long and so it’s no wonder that M.A.D. Tourbooking (NAPALM DEATH, CROWBAR), a reliable partner for the live-sector, was as quickly found as the established label Redfield Records.

On this fundament, the story of IRON WALRUS can be continued in 2014, like it has begun in 2013: The debut-album “Insidious Black Sea” will be released on April 11 and shows with CROWBAR are booked along with an appearance on the legendary Rotormania Festival. No one should miss this, because you can be assured: “Everyone who has seen us live, definitely left the show with a diabolical smile on his face.”

Frisch aber Deftig!

IRON WALRUS präsentieren sich auf ihrem Debüt-Album „Insidious Black Sea“ als fleischgewordenes Doom-/Sludge-/Noise-/Rock-Monster, das musikalische Ziehväter wie ST. VITUS, UNSANE, EYEHATEGOD, GOATSNAKE, HELMET und QUICKSAND auf keinen Fall verleugnen kann - und will! Zugleich tritt die Band aber auch den Beweis an, dass alles was „derbe auf die Glocke geht“ nicht zwingend aus Amerika oder Skandinavien stammen muss. Brutales Riffing, krachende Basshooks, treibendes Drumming, wütendes Shouting - genau das sind IRON WALRUS.

Erst im Mai 2013 formierten sich IRON WALRUS. Ruhig und entspannt wollte es das junge Team alteingesessener Profis aber nicht angehen lassen und so gab es bereits nach kürzester Zeit zwei Demo-Tracks und eine beachtliche Zahl an Klicks auf Reverbnation. Auch die erste Show fand zwei Monate nach Bandgründung entsprechend nicht im kleinen und intimen Rahmen statt, sondern man teilte sich auf Anhieb die Bühne mit TORCHE.

Bereits im Oktober 2013 hatten IRON WALRUS genug Songs geschrieben und arrangiert, so dass sie das Studio mit Robin Völkert (DEAN DIRG, UNION OF SLEEP, THE NOW DENIAL) entern konnten, um „Insidious Black Sea“ aufzunehmen. Eine Albumaufnahme später, stand man im November schon wieder für einzelne Shows mit PENTAGRAM und UNION OF SLEEP auf der Bühne.

Dass ein solch rasantes und selbstsicheres Auftreten namhafter Musiker nicht lange unentdeckt bleibt, ist kein Wunder und so war mit M.A.D. Tourbooking (NAPALM DEATH, CROWBAR, SICK OF IT ALL) schnell ein namhafter Partner für den Live-Sektor am Start und mit Redfield Records ebenso schnell ein etabliertes Label gefunden.

Somit kann die Geschichte von IRON WALRUS 2014 genau so weiter gehen, wie sie 2013 begonnen hat: Am 11. April erscheint das Debüt-Album „Insidious Black Sea“ und Shows mit CROWBAR stehen ebenfalls bereits auf dem Tourplan, genau wie eine Show auf dem legendären Rotormania Festival. Verpassen sollte man das auf keinen Fall, denn es sei versichert: „Wer uns live erlebt hat, geht in jedem Fall mit einem diabolischen Grinsen im Gesicht nach Hause!“

MIRROR OF DECEPTION: Line-up change! / Neue Bandbesetzung!

Swabian Doomsters MIRROR OF DECEPTION have decided to split ways with their bassist and drummer in order to fully concentrate on the band again. The two remaining founding members Jochen and Siffi are currently searching for replacements to start writing songs for a yet untitled new album. Find the full statement below: 

“After a two year hiatus we have come together to discuss the future of our band. Andi (bass) and Josef (drums, vocals) have decided to leave Mirror of Deception.

We have always seen ourselves as a band which rehearses on a regular basis. Due to job and family obligations it will be no longer possible to meet our own demands with this line-up. They both will continue to be active with Mountain Throne and in Josef's case also Holistic Hobos.

We are proud of all the music we have created together, everything we have experienced and achieved in these 10 years together and we are parting as friends. Siffi (vocals, guitar) and Jochen (guitar) will now search for a new bass player and drummer, work on new songs, return to the stage later this year and continue what we have started back in 1990.”

Die schwäbischen Doomer von MIRROR OF DECEPTION geben die Trennung von ihrem Bassisten und Schlagzeuger bekannt. Die zwei verbleibenden Gründungsmitglieder Jochen und Siffi suchen momentan nach Ersatz für die zwei vakanten Positionen um bald wieder mit dem Songwriting für das noch unbetitelte fünfte Studioalbum loslegen zu können. “Nach 2 Jahren Pause sind wir zusammengekommen, um über die Zukunft unserer Band zu sprechen. Andi (Bass) und Josef (Schlagzeug, Gesang) haben sich entschlossen, Mirror of Deception zu verlassen.

Wir haben uns stets als Band betrachtet, die regelmäßig gemeinsam im Proberaum aktiv ist. In der bisherigen Besetzung wird es aus familiären und beruflichen Gründen nicht mehr möglich sein, unserem eigenen Anspruch damit gerecht zu werden. Beide werden weiterhin mit Mountain Throne und in Josef's Fall auch noch Holistic Hobos aktiv sein.

Wir sind stolz auf die gemeinsam erschaffene Musik und alles, was wir in diesen 10 Jahren zusammen erlebt und erreicht haben und gehen als Freunde auseinander. Siffi (Gesang, Gitarre) und Jochen (Gitarre) werden nun nach einem neuen Bassisten und Schlagzeuger suchen, an neuen Liedern arbeiten, im Lauf des Jahres auch wieder auf der Bühne stehen und das fortsetzen, was wir 1990 begonnen haben.“

SPIRIT DESCENT arbeiten an einer sumerischen Doom-Fabel. Neues Konzeptalbum "Anthem" kommt 2014!

Im Hause SPIRIT DESCENT wurde nicht nur das Besetzungsrad weitergedreht. Die norddeutsche Doom Metal-Institution arbeitet akribisch an ihrem dritten Vollzeitalbum, welches die hektische Welt auch anno 2014 das Doomen lehren wird, wie es "Doominion" (2010) und "VII Chapters In A Minor" (2012) zuvor getan haben.

"Anthem" wartet mit elegischen Kompositionen auf, die von Anfang bis Ende vor epischer Erzählkraft und grandioser Riffarbeit nur so strotzen. Zu den Stärken der Lübecker gehören neben der Einprägsamkeit der Melodien die nicht selten an King Diamond erinnernden heavy Vocals von Sänger Jan Eichelbaum. Dafür, dass die Geschwindigkeit auf "Anthem" weiterhin in schwersten Doomgefilden taktiert, hat Mastermind Andreas Libera mit dem neuen Mann am Schlagzeug, Stefan Hoppe, gesorgt.

Neu ist auch der sphärische Konzeptcharakter von "Anthem", das sich mit einem der ältesten, jemals zu Papier gebrachten Mythen der Menscheitsgeschichte auseinandersetzt - den Sumerern, einem Volk, das im Gebiet von Sumer im südlichen Mesopotamien im 3. Jahrtausend v. Chr. erstmals den Schritt zur Hochkultur geleistet hat.

Klanglich erfinden sich SPIRIT DESCENT Gott sei Dank nicht neu, sondern bauen ihre Stärken aus und kombinieren diese mit einer Atmosphäre, die das Thema des Albums perfekt vertont und die eigene Diskografie um ein weiteres musik- und menscheitsgeschichtliches Kapitel erweitert.

ROADKILL FOR DINNER: Groovender Southern Style "Redneck-Rock" aus Oberhausen/Duisburg

Viel Zeit, Anstrengung und Bier hat es gebraucht, bis das erste Machwerk von ROADKILL FOR DINNER endlich ins Presswerk kam. Was sich musikalisch zuvor noch kreuz und quer durch alle Genres mischte, bekam mit der Rückkehr von Sänger und Gründungsmitglied Tobi endlich eine Marschrichtung: "Grooven musset, und rocken!"


Dank fähigem Tontechniker in der Band wurde das vorliegende Demo komplett im eigenen Proberaum aufgenommen und produziert. Das Artwork stammt von einem befreundeten Fotografen. Bis auf diese eine Ausnahme ist das gesamte Werk in mühseliger Kleinarbeit in Eigenregie entstanden, worauf die fünf Musiker aus Oberhausen und Duisburg, die Ihre Musik selbst als "Redneck-Rock" bezeichnen, mächtig stolz sind. Die Songs handeln von Rock'n'Roll und was der im eigenen Leben alles anrichten kann – keine Fiktionen, sondern allesamt Vergangenheitsbewältigung. Musikalisch umfasst die Scheibe die gesamte Bandbreite, von groovendem Riffing bis hin zu ruhigen Melodien.

Im Juli 2013 wurde die EP "Roadkill for Dinner" fertiggestellt. Hier ist die Tracklist:

The multi-faceted clawing at the stoner doom mantle which defined their 2010 full length, Concrete Catalyst, has been taken to pastures fresh; self-recorded behind the locked doors of their rehearsal room, Beehoover’s latest is a swirl of raw, sultry tones and rumbling octaves that strike chords with braggadocio 70’s hard rock as much as it does the thunderous rumble of Black Cobra and the jutting angles of Unsane. Beehoover are at their most rocking here, tangling the long hair of the headbangers with all the genres of beard in one matted toupee of oddball rhythms and histrionic vocals.

Formed in 2003, the German duo known as Beehoover have released three albums to date, capitalising on their distinctive drum and bass concoction. The Devil And His Mainstream will be the fourth album by Beehoover released on Exile On Mainstream, and will be available as CD, LP and digital.

OMEGA MASSIF: "Karpatia" vinyl repress available

After a longer time the second album "Karpatia" of OMEGA MASSIF is available again on vinyl (200 pieces on black with white splatter and 300 on black).

This is maybe the most awaited (instrumental) metal record of the year. Founded in 2006, OMEGA MASSIF quickly seized the attention and interest of listeners from several genres (metal to doom to sludge to instrumental postrock) through the years - and that's a result of just 2 records in 5 years: their demo KALT and the first full length GEISTERSTADT. OMEGA MASSIF are a convincing studio and live band. These aspects and the fact that they have a keen sense of sophisticated song structures are maybe the main reasons why OMEGA MASSIF filled bigger venues step by step - while having started with local squat, they have by now played festivals like ROADBURN, HELLFEST, SWINGFEST etc.!

Their new and 2nd album KARPATIA, a result of two years songwriting, again unites the well known calm melodic components with an immense dynamic and dark feeling in the monolithic heavy parts. In contrast to other instrumental bands, OMEGA MASSIF invent their own sound and are able to maintain the tension throughout the whole record without the usage of cheap climax ideas. We could continue to tell you how apocalyptic and intense this record is - but it's maybe better to push the start button and to judge by your own if OMEGA MASSIF created another masterpiece after GEISTERSTADT.

SLOMIND bringen die staubige Stoner-Wüste nach Düsseldorf! Und zwar mit jeder Menge Feeling und einem mächtigen Punch.

Ursprünglich als Instrumental-Act gestartet, ist den Kerlen inzwischen mit Pat ein verdammt cooler – für dieses Genre schon beinahe unkonventioneller - Sänger zugelaufen, der die neuen Songs auf ein imposantes Level hievt.

At a time where the music landscape gets back to its basics in some sections and time-honored, mighty riffs à la Tony Iommi are not any longer notorious “stuck in the mud”, the four piece SLOMIND from Düsseldorf, Germany tears up the Stoner Rock/Metal Genre with a big dose of distortion, fuzzy guitars and heavy beats!

Initially intended to be an instrumental band! But while recording the debut EP “Grown Against The Grain” singer Patrick Pagliaro entered the studio accidentally...

Patrick says:”As I heard what Tott (Guitars) and Tobi (Bass) banned on tape I was super stoked and had to record some vocal takes for the track “Exhale The Vile” immediately! I was waiting for very long time for such an opportunity”!

Said, done! The decision to go on with a singer just took a few seconds and now all tracks of this record are refined with a nearly unconventional voice to this music!

SLOMIND fills a gap in the Stoner genre and combine traditional with the vibe of the 90s/early 2000s!
Pledges to acts like DOWN or even the TRUCKFIGHTERS are slightly there, but besides heaviness and gloom all songs are united by memorable hooklines and make the band still EARTHY but CATCHY!!!
