BRAIN PYRAMID - "Chasma Hideout" | Stoner/Psychedelic Rock | 8,5/10

Heavy Zeug!

ENGLISH

Everybody into the hippie period of the holy CATHEDRAL, digging the weedy down tuned riffs of ELECTRIC WIZARD and fuzzed out 70s Prog Rock from Italy will love the new album, "Chasma Hideout", by BRAIN PYRAMID. Diversity is the motto on the whole release, also on the speed level. My personal favorite track is "Lucifer"- check it out and name a worthy price at the Bandcamp page of Acid Cosmonaut Records! This is heavy stuff! (SM)

DOCTOR CYCLOPS: Italienische 70s-Rotten-Rocker brachten Klangfarbe nach Leipzig, Interview im neuen Doom Metal Front-Magazin | Italian 70s Rotten Rockers brought tone color to Leipzig, Interview in new Doom Metal Front magazine

----------------------------------------------------------------

Doom Metal Front met Italian 70s Rotten Rock band DOCTOR CYCLOPS yesterday in Leipzig due to their concert at Bandhaus Leipzig and, of course, talked with vocalist Christian Draghi about the magnificent second full-length album, "Oscuropasso", which was recently released on World In Sound. Here is an extract of the interview, which will be in the new DMF:

"How would you introduce yourself to someone who has never heard of DOCTOR CYCLOPS before?
If you like almost unknown Seventies stuff such as TRUTH, JANEY and CAPTAIN BEYOND, or early 80s heroes like WITCHFINDER GENERAL, and if you're not looking for another Stoner band like ten thousand others you have to get stoned to stand, well, maybe this is the band for you!

Dr. Cyclops is a classic American Science Fiction movie from 1940. Despite that, when I heard your bandname first, I thought of a combination of UFO’s song ‘Doctor Doctor’ and the Cyclops in Greek mythology. But Cyclops is also a genera of freshwater copepods. Do you share my associations?
We didn't mean to quote the movie. Actually we didn't even know it existed when we chose the band's name. It came through a phone conversation between me and Francesco. We were discussing about some possible names and we agreed that Cyclops was perfect: good rolling sound, and evocative meaning, as the Cyclops’s mythological figure brings to mind loneliness, majesty and freakiness. At the time Francesco was taking his degree, so we simply thought that the Cyclops could be a Doctor. It came like a joke. Then we googled it and we found out about the movie. A perfect coincidence!

Oscuropasso’ was released on the 14th of February. Why did you choose Valentine’s Day to release your album? Was it intentional and how much love have you put into your tunes, or are they intended to bring love to the people?
It was the label's choice. Don't know if it was intentional, but we have pictures that prove our undisputed connection with the flower power movement. By the way, what we put in our songs is just our love for music. Don't know what they will give to people, if it'll be love or anguish, or anything else. The important thing is that they move them with strong emotions."

Read the full interview in the upcoming DMF issue #12, which will be out in April. Our opinion about "Oacuropasso" here:

"Oscuropasso" is pure Italian 'Rotten Rock', which speaks to the listeners heart, because of its different Genre influences spreading from 60s Psych and Hardrock to heavy Doom riffing. Even reminiscent of great Blues- and Krautrock. "Oscuropasso" is an experimental work of art, which seemingly arose directly from the 70s, powerfully rocking with a slight psychedelic taste to it. A well produced time travel!" - 9/10 (by Wiebke Hörmann for Doom Metal Front)

ELEVATORS TO THE GRATEFUL SKY (ETTGS) hails from Palermo, Sicily, a place where scorching heat makes music - and stonerrock, in this case - particularly angry and dazed. Combining 70's heavy rock riffing with psychedelic flights, doom metal dirges and a whole palette of influences.

"Cloud Eye" is embraced by a beautifully drawn artwork - made by Sandro (vocals) - that really embodies the psychedelic experience and allows you to join the turbulent world of ETTGS. Don't miss out on this stone-rocker from Transubstans records!

Shadow Kingdom Records releases rare RUN AFTER TO recordings

Shadow Kingdom Records has unearthed and released a collection of obscure and virtually unknown '80s Italian Doom Metal from RUN AFTER TO.

A split release entitled Run After To/Gjinn and Djinn that includes the band's lone 1988 self-titled EP and the 1985 Gjinn and Djinn demo is now available worldwide on digital and CD formats. The songs have been remastered and the CD package contains some amazing band photos and a complete biography.

With the strange name came some strange songs as well. These old dusty recordings are literally impossible to find except for a low quality upload on YouTube. Fans of old 80's Doom Metal like PAUL CHAIN VIOLET THEATRE, BLACK HOLE, and DEATH SS will absolutely love this package. Those not as familiar with Italian Doom Metal will have their interest piqued by comparisons to the likes of BLACK SABBATH, SAINT VITUS, CANDLEMASS and TROUBLE. RUN AFTER TO is one of those bands who has gone criminally unnoticed thanks to a career cut too short.

FIRELORD: New album "Amongst The Snakes" of the Italian Stoner/Doom outfit out now

FIRELORD are burning roads with fuzzy uptempo numbers, prooving that they are living "Amongst The Snakes" whilst hailing the musical roots with sluggish tracks, reminiscent of the godfathers of all that's heavy and slow - the mighty BLACK SABBATH!

FIRELORD started up in Turin in 2007 from the ashes of a Doom Metal project named Saint Judas
founded by Mario E. Bussini few years before. In 2007 Beppe Tozza, Daniele Biffaro and Giulio Buscaglione joined the project. The band plays some covers and a couple of draft tunes heavy influenced by Black Sabbath, Count Raven, Gates of Slumber, Earthride, Saint Vitus and Wino projects, Doom scene, Stoner and Metal until the '80s.

Many problems and changes happened to the lineup, until 2011 when get stable with the entrance of bass player Dario Giuva, who joins the project and partecipate to realase of the four tracks recorded in the first Firelord EP "The Burning EP".

2013' lineup is formed by Mario E.Bussini (voice, guitars), Giulio Buscaglione (drums) and Mario Pappano (bass).

RUN AFTER TO: Obscure Italian Doom Metal band from the 80s unearthed

Shadow Kingdom Records has unearthed some completely obscure and virtually unknown 80's Italian Doom Metal masters RUN AFTER TO. With the strange name came some strange songs as well. These old dusty recordings are literally impossible to find except for a low quality upload on YouTube. Fans of old 80’s Doom Metal like Paul Chain Violet Theatre, Black Hole, Death SS will absolutely love this package. We have all of their songs re-mastered and put together on 1 CD along with some amazing band photos and a complete biography on the band. If you were not well versed on Italian Doom Metal, then fans of Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Candlemass, and Trouble would be interested in getting this gem. This is one of those bands that had too short of a career. They only put out an EP in 1988 and a demo tape in 1985.  There's some confusion about the history of the song "Occultism".  That was originally a Run After To song.  Paul Chain heard the song, loved it and re-recorded it and made his own version of it.  So technically Paul Chain Violet Theatre has a Run After To cover.

Run After To (EP, 1988)
1. Who Cries for the Children
2. Melancholy
3. My Name is Man

Gjinn And Djinn (Demo, 1985)
4. Occultism
5. Walking on the Rainbow
6. Visions
7. Melancholy
8. Run After To

MANTHRA DEI: 70s-based Progressive/Psychedelic Rock from Italy out on Acid Cosmonaut Records

More than a band, MANTHRA DEI are a bunch of friends in love with lysergic deserts and forged by nights spent listening cassettes of teenage idols. Spontaneous, raw and mind-tripped tunes get pierced together by their bipolar personalities and become straight as headbanging on a kick-ass riff.

Michele, Paolo and Brano started back in 2009 as an instrumental power-trio that brought them to self-produce an EP with two log trips for almost 40 minutes of improvisations. Soon after, Maestro Paolo T. (yes, a real Maestro) joined them to start a long list of live-shows with Karma to Burn, Yawning Man, Vibravoid among many others up to a memorable Pietrasonica Festival in 2011.

After that the band decided to fix their jams into an album and consequently to get closed in a rehearsal room for almost two years … at least up to 2013, when Nasoni Rec – Colour Haze, Machine, Siena Root anyone? – decided to cast on vinyl their recordings. CD edition was taken in charge by a young Italian label, Acid Cosmonauts, that spread the world with a limited edition of 300 copies of their first full-length.

1.Stone Face – a majestic trip into space/psych/prog areas
2.Xolotl – heavy one: heavy riffing and head banging for the masses
3.Legendary Lamb – yes, after all we are a stoner band and this is supposed to sound like a stoner song
4.Urjammer – special intermezzo to relax you from cardiac problems
5.Blue Phantom – the suite: stoner/psych/prog/blues/ethnic/acid/doom/kraut/heavy mixed together without any rules. May the mindtrip begin!
6.Stone Face (Acoustic Reprise) – our special message of love & anguish for this cruel world

What to find on the album? Hawkwind, Causa Sui, Can, Kyuss, Earthless, Black Sabbath, Colour Haze, King Crimson, Motorpsycho, Popol Vuh, Sleep, Goblin, Hypnos69, Jethro Tull, Ozric Tentacles mashed-up with no criteria but with horns up against the sky!

FANGS OF THE MOLOSSUS: Album available & "I Drink Your Blood" single soon to be released

FANGS OF THE MOLOSSUS are a psych-doom metal band from the Florence area. The first band nucleus dates back to 2011, but several line-up changes caused delays and we reached some stability only in late 2012. Currently the band consists of Acid King Khanjia (vocals & guitar), Amp Zilla (lead guitar & space FX), Count J. Vendetta (guitar & space FX), Daemon Nox (bass guitar) and our newest member Iako (drums).

They all have previous musical experience in bands that are/were sometimes radically different from Fangs' doom: Combo De La Muerte, Bobby Tumultous, Tombstone, Cleaver, Bud Spencer Drunk Explosion, Riviera, El Cardinal And The Electric Dicks… From straightforward metal to garage rock or latin jazz, we've separately done them all (all genres: no pun intended). Having a common interest in muddy, slow-paced music too, they just wanted to see what could come out of this apparently weird mix of players.

Fangs Of The Molossus aim to let most of their influences freely flow into a unique blend. Music wise, if our backbone is the solid doom that we all equally enjoy, once in a while you may happen to hear something that reveals our individual sensibilities: Hawkwind, Loop, Swans, Danzig, or even Morphine and Spacemen 3. It comes completely natural for us to start composing something that is initially a heavy, rough and obsessive jam (some sort of psychedelic "ostinato") and end up with something else, that shares very little with the starting idea. At times structurally simple and hard rock-ish, other times layered, with frequent noise/drone or space rock intervals, we don't always know what the final output of a song will be. And on stage many tracks become longer, or get faster.

As for the lyrics, there are many inspirations and, again, no forced lowest common denominator. Cheap pseudo-satanism is undoubtedly funny, but it's not our cup of tea, unless proposed in a cinematic, artsy way. Same goes with drug-driven stuff. We may find intriguing subjects anywhere: in ancient Roman or Etruscan history and mythology just as much as in early 70's horror movies, in science fiction literature, in a Beksinski painting or in a comic book by Hideshi Hino. Escapism, of course. But who would expect cocky social commentary or political commitment from a doom outfit?

Going back to the music, after a few warm-up gigs with our current line-up, supporting bands like Caronte, our close friend Giulio's Funeral Marmoori, Electric Taurus, Mouth Of The Architect and Witche's Brew, we focused on the tunes we found more defining for our sound and started recording our five-track self produced debut, that was released on July 2013.

Soon to be released: "I Drink Your Blood" single (limited edition on colored 7")
